Introduction

"Mobile TV, while still in its infancy, will grow in three years into a $3 billion market, heavily concentrated amoung young consumers who will forsake traditional broadcast for specially-tailored content on mobile phones and other devices" -- Michael Schueppert, President of Modeo.

This one day seminar looked at some of the exciting developments taking place today in mobile TV technology, with presentations from leading companies in the Cambridge area and elsewhere, including Broadcom, Frontier Silicon, IPWireless, Light Blue Optics, Microsoft Research, QUALCOMM, and TTP.

Speaker Profiles

Dr. Hyacinth Nwana

Managing Director, Mobile Media Solutions Division Arqiva

Dr Hyacinth S. Nwana joined Arqiva in July 2005 as Managing Director, Mobile Media Solutions. He is responsible for all the company's activities in mobile TV and datacasting. Previously he was Director of Products, Content & Technology at Quadriga Worldwide Ltd - the leading EMEA technology and managed services provider to the hospitality industry.

Before Quadriga, he was Executive Director and Global Chief Technology Officer & Investment Manager at antfactory Holding Ltd - a $500M technology investment firm. Before antfactory, he worked for British Telecommunications plc as a senior manager at the Advanced Communications Research (ACR) department at BT Laboratories, Adastral Park - now BT Exact.

Dr Nwana holds a first degree in Computer Science & Electronic Engineering from the University of Birmingham, an MSc in Computer Science, a PhD in Artificial Intelligence/Computer Science from Aston University, Birmingham and an MA in Computer Science Education from Queens' College, Cambridge. He also holds an MBA from the London Business School, University of London.

Between 1988 and 1994, he worked in various roles (lecturer, researcher, visiting or contract scientist) for the Universities of Liverpool, Keele and Calgary (sponsored by the Royal Society), Shell Research Labs, Unilever Research Labs and BT Labs. He remains a visiting professor at Brunel University in West London.


Chris Cytera

Product Marketing Manager, Mobile TV, Broadcom Europe Ltd

Chris Cytera is the Product Marketing Manager for Broadcom's Mobile TV group. His focus is the definition and marketing of power-efficient CMOS multi-band tuners and multi-format demodulators for hand-held devices. Prior to the formation of the Mobile TV group Chris worked with clients including Pace and TCL in bringing low-power VideoCore(R) media processors to a wide range of devices, from mobile phones to portable media players.

Chris has previously held technical and marketing positions at TTPCom, Inmos, and STMicroelectronics.


Mici McCullagh

Director of RF Engineering, Frontier Silicon Ltd

Michael McCullagh is Director of RF Engineering at Frontier Silicon Ltd a company that delivers technology solutions in the digital audio broadcast (DAB) and mobile TV areas. He is currently leading the development of the company.s next generation silicon radio IC that will handle multi-standard and multi-band transmissions for delivering TV to the handset. His previous job was as Technical Director with RF Integration for 3 years where he was team lead on the development of two separate radio ICs for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications operating at data rates up to 480MBps. Prior to this he worked with Parthus for 4 years leading the radio IC development in CMOS and SiGe BiCMOS for Bluetooth, GPS and WLAN applications. His previous role was with the GPS company Navstar for 2 years where he designed and delivered one of the early, fully integrated GPS receiver ICs along with a corresponding module product. Before this he spent two years at Marconi working on power amplifiers for various wireless applications. His first job in industry was at BT Labs in Ipswich where he worked on a range of wireless systems including DECT, 60GHz and free space optical techniques.

He has a 1st class hons in Electrical and Electronic Eng from Huddersfield University, Masters with distinction in Microwaves and Optoelectronics from UCL and is a member of the IET and IEEE. He is also a Chartered Engineer. He has published extensively in the wireless semiconductor field and has filed two patents on novel architectures for multi-mode radios.


Jerry Hanley

Director, Business Development, Europe & Latin America QUALCOMM

Jerry Hanley is Director of Business Development for Qualcomm's MediaFLO Technologies Group, for Europe and Latin America. Jerry has been in product management and business development roles in Qualcomm for over two years. Jerry has been in the wireless telecom industry for over fifteen years, working for companies such as Lucent Technologies, Sony, and magic4 (now part of Openwave) prior to joining Qualcomm, focusing on wireless infrastructure, wireless handset, billing software, and messaging software for mobile devices. Jerry holds an MBA from the Thunderbird International Business School, and a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Richmond, Virginia in Political Science and English Literature.


Mathew Palmer

Business Development Manager TTP

Since joining TTP, Europe's leading independent technology and product development company, Mathew has developed products and led development teams in sectors including printing, banking automation, DIY tools, process automation, consumer products and wireless. Recent activities focus on management and international business development in markets including digital radio, IPTV and mobile TV and multimedia. After graduating with degrees from Imperial College and Surrey University, Mathew worked in the magnetic recording industry in the UK and USA, before joining TTP in 1989.

Mathew will comment on the desires of customers for content in the emerging broadcast to mobile market, based upon TTP's experiences of the launch of the branded entertainment system by BT Movio and Virgin Mobile, and upon other new business opportunities in this growing multimedia area.


Andrew Williams

Director, Network Architecture, IPWireless

Andrew Williams joined IPWireless in 1999 after previously holding positions at AT&T, Bell Labs and Lucent technologies in the USA and Europe. He is the architect of the Core Network aspects of the IPWireless product line and has most recently been supporting the company's activities on "TDtv" for Mobile TV.


Tim Regan

Research Engineer, Socio-Digital Systems Group, Microsoft Research

Much of the work on Mobile TV focuses on the market opportunities and the technical provision of delivering broadcast video to mobile phones and portable media centres. In this talk Tim will pull those strands together by looking at the experiences that Mobile TV may offer, and how we think those experiences may be adopted and extended by users. Tim will look at some of the findings of the DAB-IP trial in Cambridge and talk about future research opportunities in this arena.

Tim Regan is a Research Software Development Engineer with Microsoft Research in Cambridge where he is a member of the Computer Mediated Living group. Tim's current research interests are social computing and mobile entertainment. Before this Tim worked in the Social Computing group in Redmond; and before that Tim ran the Shared Spaces group at BT Labs.


Nic Lawrence

Director and Founder, Light Blue Optics Ltd

Nic Lawrence has worked with a variety of organisations since 1993 including large companies (BR Research and AEA Technology), university spin-outs (Cambridge Display Technology, Intelligent Pixels Inc. and Screen Technology) and medium-sized technology firms (Forth Dimension Displays). He was the CEO of Light Blue Optics from its formation until mid-2006, and is now responsible for the company's relationships with component suppliers. Nic holds M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Cambridge University, specialising in novel display system architectures.
